Pharmacy Technician in the Work Place

The usual work places of a pharmacy technician include retail pharmacies, hospitals, department stores, nursing homes and care establishments. This job entails someone to work on shifting schedules that may include weekends and holidays. The responsibilities of a pharmacy technician involve carrying heavy boxes, refilling medical supplies, preparing medications, mixing and weighing prescription drugs and conversing with patients. It is very important that they build a good professional relationship with customers so that they can create an atmosphere of trust and ease. Pharmacy technicians should possess excellent mathematical, spelling and reading skills. They should be able to work in precision and independently. However, they are also encouraged to seek the assistance of a pharmacist especially in answering a patient’s questions about drugs and health concerns. Pharmacy technicians are expected to be responsible and well-organized as they are dealing with prescription medications.

Although there is no such thing as a standard education requirement for this job, most employers prefer to hire those that have undergone a formal training program. To have a certification and a previous work experience will also serve as an edge in landing this position. Training can be acquired from community colleges, hospitals and even the military. The programs are usually inclusive of the internship, classroom discussions, hands-on experience, associate’s degree, diploma or a certificate. Aside from the education and the certification, employers seek applicants who possess a skill in managing inventory, preparing medications and counting tablets. This is where on-the-job training and previous work experience become very useful. Proficiency in computers is also considered an edge in this career. Aspiring pharmacy technicians can get their certification from either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians. Securing one is highly optional but is definitely a plus when applying for such a position.

As predicted by the United States Department of Labor, the job outlook for this career is quite promising for the coming years. The demand for pharmacy technicians will increase as they will be tasked to perform the duties of a pharmacy aide as well as some of the important assignments of a pharmacist. There will be numerous job openings for individuals who want to pursue the career of a pharmacy tech. And because many employees are expected to leave the field due to a career change, the employment growth is bound to rapidly increase as well. Pharmacy technicians who take the time to gain more knowledge and skill about the job may be offered advancement in their work. They may be assigned to do supervisory tasks, sales and some other specialty position. They can also become pharmacists if they pursue the proper education. A pharmacy technician may choose to work either full time or part time. If they work in a facility that is open for 24 hours, then they may also work on night shifts. But those who have earned seniority with their employers may negotiate their work schedules. That’s just one of the many perks that a veteran in the field can enjoy. And since they work in a clean and well-ventilated facility, they are expected to abide by its established sanitary rules and regulations.
